The
Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada has released its
second five-year Greater Snow Goose management plan for Quebec.
Entitled Plan for Sustainable Integrated Management of the Greater
Snow Goose in Québec: 2005-2010 Action Plan, it is the successor
to the first action plan, initiated in 1997, which helped to stabilize
the species’ population. Following a series of consultations
that began in 2004, the partners were able to define a common vision
of Greater Snow Goose issues, achieving a broad consensus for the
preparation of the present management plan. The object of the plan
is to maintain the goose population at a healthy level (below an
as-yet undefined critical threshold) and to preserve the ecological
integrity of the species’ natural habitats. This objective
will help to minimize crop damage while maximizing the economic
benefits associated with both viewing and hunting activities.
The management plan is set out in a document of some 40 pages, which includes an assessment of the 1997 plan, an update of knowledge related to the species (population, impacts, economic benefits, etc.), the plan’s objectives and directions, and the strategies to be implemented over the coming years.
