Marshes teeming with life, rare plants and fishes, birds everywhere, a spectacular waterfall close by, a river mouth swarming with fishers … the banks of the St. Lawrence River at Lévis are an inestimable treasure, a genuine one to be preserved and rehabilitated, both for their natural elements and for the landscape and their recreational possibilities.

In recent years, the Quebec City and Chaudière-Appalaches ZIP Committee has mapped out this asset, from the river to Highway 132, and from Saint-Nicolas to Lauzon. Now, it also offers an overall profile together with many potential courses of action for decision makers, various conservation groups and the general population. The fruits of the Committee’s labours are presented in a document entitled Conservation et mise en valeur des rives du fleuve Saint-Laurent à Lévis – Éléments biophysiques, paysages d’intérêt et infrastructures offrant un potentiel de mise en valeur [conservation and rehabilitation of the banks of the St. Lawrence at Lévis – biophysical elements, vistas of interest and infrastructures that offer potential enhancement]. The project was financed by the Community Interaction Program (CIP).
What is certainly most impressive about this document is its two large-format composite maps. They provide an overall look at all the components identified in the study that are, or could be, preserved and rehabilitated. The first map presents the biophysical elements and infrastructures of interest. The second presents landscape features of interest. “This is the first time such a map of landscapes on the St. Lawrence has been produced,” Hamida Hassein-Bey, the ZIP Committee’s executive director, points out.
To develop its profile of the riverbanks, the Committee drew on more than 40 databases. To come up with its recommendations, it held meetings with targeted stakeholders. They expressed their concerns and their visions for the future. This resulted in the proposal of some 15 courses of action for preserving and rehabilitating both the natural environment and the landscape. The conservation of the most valuable natural and heritage elements, shore access, the harmonization of conservation with recreational activities, and vistas of the river received special attention.
