Study of the sauger of Lake Saint-Pierre

Where do the sauger of Lake Saint-Pierre and those of its archipelago spawn? Where do these fish go after spawning? Do some move towards Montreal or Quebec?

The Lac Saint-Pierre ZIP Committee hopes to obtain answers to these and other such questions through the a study of the life history of the sauger, which began in spring 2008. In spring and fall, the committee, in collaboration with the community wildlife area of Lake Saint-Pierre, a Lake Saint-Pierre outfitter and Quebec’s Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune, marked (using tags) 2000 saugers.

The ZIP committee is counting on the good will of fishers to return the greatest possible number of tags, accompanied by forms that provide information such as the date and the place of capture. The forms are available at marinas, outfitters, and retail hunting and fishing stores, etc.

At the end of September, when marking was not yet over, 30 labels had been returned to the ZIP committee. This is excellent, according to Director General Louise Corriveau, because about 100 forms will yield a good portrait of the situation and allow the committee to recommend actions to ensure the maintenance of critical habitat for the species.

A fish species that is extremely desired in Quebec, the sauger has been less abundant in catches in Lake Saint-Pierre and its archipelago over the past seven or eight years. As well, the fish taken are much smaller, which indicates problems in this population.

A second part of the study, in spring 2009, will be the placement of transmitters on approximately 20 fish in order to follow their movements during an entire year.
