Active communities facing on the St. Lawrence
To mark both the 20th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Plan and the 15th anniversary of the ZIP program, Stratégies Saint-Laurent has organized an important forum about the river, which will take place in March 2009. Under the theme of community involvement in the sustainable development of the St. Lawrence, this event will bring 150 participants from all walks of life together at the Congress Centre in Trois-Rivières on March 22, 23 and 24, 2009.
Representatives from communities and from the education sector will meet with members of First Nations, as well as representatives of governments, municipalities, and industry. The main objective will be to strengthen the communities’ capacity to implement the sustainable development of the St. Lawrence by promoting collaboration among various sectors. We will encourage networking, cooperation, consultation, and mobilization.
The forum will therefore be an opportunity for active participation. At the forum exchanges between all stakeholders concerned about the St. Lawrence will be encouraged, as well as sharing of experiences and visions. Scheduled are panel discussions at which representatives of each of the invited sectors will take part, projects based on multisectoral collaboration will be highlighted, and participants, distributed among approximately 10 workshops, will discuss the main issues linked to sustainable development of the St. Lawrence, such as climate change, recovering the uses of the river, water quality, biodiversity and resource use.
We emphasize that the forum will be an ecologically responsible event with a carbon-neutral impact (greenhouse gases created will be compensated for by tree planting) and that its environmental impacts will be reduced to a minimum (recycling, electronic correspondence and public transit will be encouraged).
