The Planning Registry for Dredging Activities now online

The Planning Registry for Dredging Activities is now online. Made up of a portal, the new computerized tool allows users to collect all relevant information on dredging projects and to view information on similar activities at:

http://planstlaurent.qc.ca/registreactivitesdragage/Home.aspx

All developers are therefore invited to use the registry as of now and to enter data on their current or upcoming projects in the St. Lawrence and its tributaries, such as the type and amount of materials that will be dredged, the type of dredging equipment being considered, the project timetable, etc.

The registry’s success depends on the participation of users, who will in this way contribute to implementing the Sustainable Navigation Strategy. There are many associated benefits: better sharing of knowledge among developers, regulatory organizations and the public; information on the technologies used; more efficient planning; potential savings in time and money; up-to-date information on current federal and provincial regulations, etc.

Information sessions will be held throughout the year. These half-day sessions are intended for users to help them become familiar with the registry and its features. Those who have started using the registry can submit comments and suggestions. The dates and locations of these sessions will be provided shortly.

The Sustainable Navigation Strategy was developed by the Navigation Coordination Committee during Phase III of the St. Lawrence Action Plan, which has since become the St. Lawrence Plan for a Sustainable Development. Released in 2004, the strategy’s aim is to foster the development of navigation activities in their many forms, while respecting the environmental conditions in the St. Lawrence. The strategy is an initial systematic attempt to direct the management of navigation activities while taking their economic, environmental and social impacts into account, including dredging activities and the management of dredged materials.

To achieve true integrated management of dredging activities in the St. Lawrence, the Navigation Coordination Committee has created sub-committees: the Comité de concertation de la recherche sur le dragage (CCRD) and the Comité sur la planification et l’évaluation environnementale du dragage (CPEED). Since their inception, the two committees have been developing different tools. The Planning Registry for Dredging Activities is one of the outcomes of the creation of the CPEED.
