Improvement of the St. Lawrence

Fou de Bassan

Did you know

that the Northern Gannet population of Bonaventure Island in the Gaspé has made a full recovery since the late 1980s?

Following a population decline of nearly 25% caused by the presence of the insecticide DDT in eggs during the 1960s and 1970s, the gannet colony showed steady growth after DDT was banned, and the number of gannet pairs increased from 24,000 in 1989 to more than 53,000 in 2004.
