Uses of the St. Lawrence

Did you know

Photo : M. Fortinthat during the first half of the 20th century, a number of towns along the St. Lawrence estuary used to hold striped bass sport fishing tournaments? Hundreds of fishing enthusiasts entered these competitions in the hope of catching the largest striped bass; the largest specimens typically measured up to 1 m in length and weighed as much as a dozen kilos.

Formerly abundant in the river from Quebec City to Kamouraska, this anadromous fish (anadromous fish live in brackish water or salt water but spawn in fresh water) disappeared from the estuary in the 1960s. Since the factors that caused its disappearance have been brought under better control, in 2002 efforts were initiated to reintroduce the species.

Annual stocking of some 50,000 hatchery-reared fish over the next 10 years should permit the rebuilding of a viable population in the estuary.
