The St. Lawrence Plan Celebrates 20 Years

On June 3, 1988, the governments of Canada and Québec decided to join forces to conserve, protect and restore the St. Lawrence ecosystem. A co-operative agreement was signed, which led the governments to reveal, in June of 1989, the details of the St. Lawrence Action Plan, a plan which, at the time, was deemed ambitious due to its targeted objectives and commitments. Four five-year agreements have been signed since 1988; two of these are better known as the St. Lawrence Vision 2000 Action Plan, and the latest one, signed in 2005, is called the St. Lawrence Plan for a Sustainable Development.

This section of the site contains an article that provides an overview of the St. Lawrence Plan throughout its four consecutive phases, placing it in the context of government actions relating to the river since the early 1970s. The article also highlights the factors that have contributed to the success of this major initiative to conserve, protect, restore and enhance the St. Lawrence. A section devoted to the St. Lawrence Plan provides additional information on each of the Plan’s phases.

The section also contains an overview of the greatest accomplishments of the St. Lawrence Plan, as well as the results achieved over the last twenty years. A chronicle relates the main events (about twenty in all) that have marked the twenty-year history of the St. Lawrence Plan. The section will be enriched over the next few months by a series of testimonials from people who have played a key role since the very beginning of the St. Lawrence Plan and who are proud to have contributed to this initiative.

Finally, government partners have planned various activities under the theme Il y a longtemps que je t’aime… (I have loved you for a long time…) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Plan. The schedule of activities is available in this section.
