River access

Access to the banks of the St. Lawrence and to the river itself becomes a priority for the public as the clean-up efforts bear fruit. The St. Lawrence Plan endeavours to meet this new demand as much as it can. Restoration, development and enhancement projects follow on from one another, particularly since the third phase, to offer maximum public access to riverside communities.

  • Restoration of about 50 wharfs and other federal government maritime infrastructures, notably under the Program to Dispose of Surplus Marine Facilities (phases 1 and 4). – In most cases, the wharfs are returned to the municipality after restoration.
  • Completion of eight facilities to promote access to fishing sites (phase 4). – Access ramps, breakwaters, dredging etc.; in cooperation with municipalities.
  • Offer-and-demand analysis for access to the St. Lawrence (phase 4). – In order to carry out an appraisal and identify the deficiencies for each type of use per river sector, specifically in large urban centres.
  • Drawing up a map of public access potential on the Island of Montreal (phase 4). – By Health Canada in cooperation with the two Montreal ZIP committees.
  • Carrying out of numerous activities by the ZIP committees and other groups under the Community Interaction Program (phases 2, 3, 4).
