In agriculture

Agriculture was included in the intervention areas of the SLP during the second phase. Essentially to reduce the impact of agricultural activities on watercourses, which, ultimately, improves the quality of the St. Lawrence. There are already several convincing results.

  • Agro-environmental diagnosis of four designated drainage basins, specifically, Boyer, Chaudière, L’Assomption and Yamaska, and ecosystem diagnosis for the Chaudière, Saint-François, Saint-Maurice and Yamaska rivers (phase 2).
  • Environmental monitoring of pesticides in several watercourses of priority drainage basins (phases 2 and 3).
  • Preparation of four reports promoting the consideration of restoring rivers in the agricultural environment (phase 2).
  • Implementation of four pilot environmental intervention projects on streams in the agricultural environment, in the basins of the Chaudière, L’Assomption, Yamaska and Boyer rivers (phase 2).
  • Implementation of 93 technology development projects (including transfer) in the area of agricultural clean-up (phase 3). – Projects which led to the adoption of agro-environmental best practices on farms.
  • Around 10,000 inspections in agricultural companies in six target regions (phase 3). – To check manure and slurry storage compliance, pursuant to two Quebec regulations.
  • Reduction in pollution from coliforms, nitrogen and phosphorous thanks to the installation of 3,770 leakproof manure and slurry storage facilities in the main agricultural drainage basins of the St. Lawrence (phase 3).
  • Several awareness activities on the importance of integrated pest control, to minimise the use of pesticides in agriculture (phase 3). – With farmer members of 79 agro-environmental advisory clubs.
