Just like a person with its own genetic code, the St. Lawrence is filled with the contributions of all its tributaries. The filmmaker presents us the river, going downstream to upstream. Along with Isabelle Saulnier, the former coordinator of the Monitoring the State of the St. Lawrence Committee, artist Chloé Saint—Marie will be our guide. With them, we will learn about some of the River’s tributaries: the Saguenay River Fjord, and the Etchemin, Richelieu and Yamaska rivers.

DISCOVERING THE ST. LAWRENCE

A presentation of a series of popular lectures under the title: Discovering the St. Lawrence. The purpose of these talks is to inform visitors and have them learn about different aspects of the St. Lawrence.

1:30 p.m. – Discovering a River – A Series of Three Talks
The St. Lawrence and Its History

Speaker: Maïka Tardif, Environment Canada's Biosphère

A major port of entry into the heart of our continent and an essential vehicle in its development for centuries, the St. Lawrence was and will remain extremely important for the inhabitants living on its shores or those navigating its waters. How can we take back this magnificent waterway? By learning more about it, we can better appreciate it. Its history, geography, incredible biodiversity, its current condition and its future are just some of the fascinating topics covered in this series of three lectures.

Place: Auditorium of the Musée de la civilisation
Free entry

2:30 p.m. – Secrets of the St. Lawrence Marine Depths Revealed

Speaker: Richard Sanfaçon, Maurice-Lamontagne Institute, Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Using many illustrations, images and photos, the Canada Hydrographic Service, Quebec Region, invites you to discover the underwater topography of the majestic St. Lawrence Seaway. With depth recorders and global positioning systems (GPS), the well-guarded secrets of the depths of the St. Lawrence have been brought to light. Underwater discoveries of topographic entities, such as dune fields, landslides, winding fissures, gas vents: these entities were not known until recently, shall be presented, as well as images of known and unknown shipwrecks, some discovered only five or six years ago.

Place: Auditorium of the Musée de la civilisation
Free entry

PERISCOPE: Film Programming

Series 2: Vu du Large (Seen from the Open Sea, in French)

7:00 p.m. – The River That Feeds
Whoever is interested in the river knows about the issue of depleted traditional ground fish stocks. We must look at fishing in a new way. This series will let us discover new species that could be used. For some, this new resource is synonymous with “nouvelle cuisine”. Others are looking at “domesticating” the sea. Sea farming is looked at as done in the Baie-des-Chaleurs and the Magdalen Islands. This series is presented as a prelude to a culinary demonstration dedicated to lesser known species of the St. Lawrence. On the menu: Monkfish, whelks, sea urchin and Stimpson’s surfclam, among others.

Guest speaker : Georges Mamelonet, mayer of Percé and owner of the Auberge du pêcheur.
Place: Auditorium of the Musée de la civilisation
Entry: upon reservation.
