DISCOVERING THE ST. LAWRENCE

12:00 p.m. - Life on Board a Coast Guard Ship

Speaker: Johnny Leclair, Fisheries and Oceans Canada

The red and white boats of the Coast Guard are part of the St. Lawrence landscape. What is life like on board of one of these ships? Discover the everyday lives of patrollers during sea research activities. Take part in removing the river buoys at -40°C. How many litres of gas is needed to fill an ice breaker? Lastly, learn everything about Quebec's Coast Guard fleet, even things you dared not ask. A nice "old salt", Captain Johnny Leclaire, brings life to these sailors who proudly wear the maple leaf on their uniform.

Place of Life and Survival

Speaker: Maïka Tardif, Environment Canada's Biosphère

A major port of entry into the heart of our continent and an essential vehicle in its development for centuries, the St. Lawrence was and will remain extremely important for the inhabitants living on its shores or those navigating its waters. How can we take back this magnificent waterway? By learning more about it, we can better appreciate it. Its history, geography, incredible biodiversity, its current condition and its future are just some of the fascinating topics covered in this series of three lectures.

2:30 p.m. – Quebec, Home to Flora Found Nowhere Else!

Speaker: Hubert Pelletier, Conservation de la nature Canada and Nicole Lavoie, Fondation québécoise pour la protection du patrimoine naturel

St. Lawrence's freshwater estuary, near the greater region of Quebec City, is a unique ecosystem in terms of biodiversity and stands out with its many vulnerable plants, which are not found anywhere else in the world. Since 1990, this important major area of endemics in Quebec motivated the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Fondation québécoise pour la protection du patrimoine naturel to carry out conservation projects to protect these rare plants. Therefore, this is an invitation to discover some remarkable sites, such as the Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures mud flats, the Pointe de Saint-Vallier and the Pointe aux Pins on the Iles aux Grues.

Series 1 – Le Saint-Laurent, un fleuve, à l'égal du Nil et de l'Amazone  (The St. Lawrence, a River Equal to the Nile and Amazon)

3:30 p.m. – A River like the Sea
The St. Lawrence is like a sea… Only better, its lovers say. The documentary explores all its diversity, riches and moods. Under its often restless surface, it is always calm and welcoming for divers. The underwater camera shows an astonishing variety of organisms that live in an even more colourful world than seen in the South Seas.
