The St. Lawrence – a thriving community

The St. Lawrence is at the very core of our development. Flowing over more than 3,000 kilometres, the St. Lawrence is a major gateway to the heart of our continent and an essential driver of our development. Not only is this ecosystem home to numerous species, it is also a vital source of drinking water and resources for the population.

The St. Lawrence is also a commercial shipping channel, a recreational waterway, and a unique site that lends itself to a multitude of activities: commercial and sport fishing, shellfish harvesting, hunting, swimming, ecotourism, and water sports. The maintenance and development of these activities are vitally important to the users of the St. Lawrence.

The information in this section deals mainly with the various ways in which we use the St. Lawrence.

Did you know...” information capsules provide an opportunity to learn about the recovery of some of these uses.
