Northern Gannet – A Sentinel Species for the Gulf, 5th edition, 2026

Highlights
Since 2012, there has been a slight improvement in the status of the northern gannet in Quebec, despite fluctuations in colony size. In fact, notwithstanding a mass mortality event caused by an avian influenza outbreak in 2022 (a 39% decline in the breeding population), breeding success on Bonaventure Island has improved significantly since 2019. Contaminants measured in the species are decreasing and do not appear to be affecting the species’ reproduction.
